The purpose of the First Continental Congress, convened in 1774, was to coordinate a response to British policies and actions that the American colonies viewed as oppressive. Delegates from twelve of the thirteen colonies gathered in Philadelphia to discuss issues such as taxation without representation and other grievances against British rule. The Congress aimed to unify the colonies, express their discontent, and ultimately seek redress from the British government. It resulted in the formation of the Continental Association, promoting boycotts of British goods, and laid the foundation for future collective action leading to the American Revolution.
