The treaty that formally ended the American Civil War was the Treaty of Appomattox Court House, often simply referred to as Appomattox. Signed on April 9, 1865, the treaty was an agreement between Confederate General Robert E. Lee and Union General Ulysses S. Grant, marking the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia to the Union forces.
