The main goal of the Prohibition movement in the United States was to eliminate the consumption of alcoholic beverages, which reformers believed was a root cause of social problems such as crime, family violence, and moral decay. Advocates, primarily from the temperance movement, sought to promote a healthier and more moral society by banning alcohol. This led to the passing of the 18th Amendment in 1919, which prohibited the manufacture, sale, and transportation of intoxicating liquors.
