The signing of the Treaty of Ghent in 1814 officially marked the end of the War of 1812 between the United States and Great Britain. The treaty, signed on December 24, 1814, effectively restored the status quo ante bellum, meaning that territorial boundaries returned to their pre-war lines, and no significant territorial gains were made by either side. Although the treaty did not address many of the issues that led to the war, such as trade restrictions or impressment of American sailors, it paved the way for improved relations between the U.S. and Britain and fostered a sense of national unity in America.
